Defending champion Argentina will clash against Ecuador in the first quarterfinal of Copa America 2024 at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on Thursday (Friday in IST).

Argentina finished at the top of Group A, winning all three matches against Canada, Chile and Peru, respectively. Ecuador finished as Group B runner-up, finishing below Venezuela.

La Albiceleste missed the services of Lionel Messi in their final group match against Peru after the Argentina captain suffered a minor injury, which he said wasn’t serious. However, Messi is set to return for the quarter-finals after returning to training.

Argentina assistant coach Walter Samuel, who took charge of the team's last game with Lionel Scaloni suspended, spoke afterwards about the prospect of facing Ecuador.

“They are different rivals,” he said. “We faced Ecuador in the last friendly. We know them and (they) have a capable coach. The physical part is a big deal, but they have a great technical quality, too. They are playing this tournament well, and it’ll be difficult."

So far Lionel Messi and Co. have made light work of Copa America, winning all three of their group games without conceding a goal as they beat Canada, Chile and Peru. But now the quality really starts to ramp up as a young, hungry Ecuadorian side awaits in Texas. The embarrassment of riches Lionel Scaloni has to choose from is why Argentina, the reigning Copa America and World Cup champs, are expected to win it all again this summer. But it’s all about getting the balance right in attack to get the best out of Messi while also being clinical as Lautaro Martinez has looked sharp off the bench and Julian Alvarez is buzzing around as he loves to do.

Ecuador looked decent in Group B as they beat Jamaica and drew with Mexico after opening up with a surprise loss to Venezuela. Felix Sanchez’s team were very good at the 2022 World Cup and that tournament experience for so many young players will be invaluable, even though they know they are coming up against a juggernaut. Moises Caicedo, Enner Valencia and Piero Hincapie are the stars through the spine of their team, but they have lost six of their last seven competitive games against Argentina.

In a good news, Argentina's Lionel Messi returned to training as they prepare to face Ecuador in the Copa America quarter-finals in Houston this week. Messi had not trained since sustaining a groin/thigh injury during his side's 1-0 win against Chile on June 25. He sat out Argentina's 2-0 victory over Peru on Saturday.

The Argentine football federation said the 37-year-old did some kinesiology work before training and was with the rest of the group afterwards.
